Conservation

Mission

Community Conservation Mission Statement

“To provide education, environmental awareness and support to the community which promotes the importance of conservation for the benefit of future generations of Masai people.

They are ultimately the custodians of the Ol Chorro Losoit area responsible for the protection of the unique flora, fauna, and wildlife of this unique region."

Vision

“To develop an environment where wildlife and people live in harmony. Preserving the Masai culture, and improving the health, education, and general well being of the people whilst developing awareness of the importance of protecting the wildlife and habitat to ensure a successful tourism future.”

The Challenge

Fulfilling this mission statement and progressing towards our vision requires the commitment of both the Community and external sources.

It is essential that the community derives direct financial benefit from the tourism industry and thereby appreciates and acts to protect the proceeds of conservation for their own livelihoods.

Even with this commitment we still require external support.

Whilst we at Rekero and some of our clients continue to contribute to this important cause it will not be enough to secure the future. We are looking to extend our sources of income to enable us to do far more.

Did you know?

  • The average annual income of a working person in Kenya is 450$.
  • The cost of school fees per annum for secondary school education per student is 450$.
  • The cost (education fees only) per annum for university education per student is 750$.
  • The cost of putting a secondary school leaver through the Guiding School is 1800$.
  • The cost of fuelling a home via an eco-friendly source is 5 times that of charcoal and the use of wood is free. Both of the latter options eventually destroy the woodland/ forest habitat.
  • The population of this area has grown 20 fold over the last 10 years.

You can see from the facts above how difficult it is for the local people to meet these costs and therefore how their short term priorities for survival potentially damages the environment we all wish to preserve. The local community needs our help to protect this precious eco system for future generations. It becomes clear that any donation no matter how small can make a difference.

Rekero Community Conservation Objectives

  • To protect and preserve wildlife and their habitats from the effects of human encroachment.
  • To maximise the financial benefits accruing to the local community from tourism.
  • To enhance household incomes through income generating initiatives.
  • To improve the general standard of living of the local community through education and healthcare.
  • To encourage sustainable use of natural resources and increase community participation in resource management. (i.e. use of fuels that do not destroy local forests).
  • To develop alternate income sources to help reduce the dependence on crops and livestock, which exacerbates animal/ human conflict.
